Description
A lovely Brown-headed Nuthatch, Sitta pusilla, shows off his Spiderman skills by hanging effortlessly on the side of a stone wall. Weighing on 0.4 oz and about 4 inches long, these defying gravity poses make it look easy. The Brown-headed Nuthatch is smaller in size than the White-breasted Nuthatch as well as faster in movement and flight. Their small size is not represented in their loud and distinct "squeaky-dog-toy" chirp. When two of these Brown-headed Nuthatches get together the squeaks they make talking back and forth to one another is extremely comical.
These little guys are losing population, so if you live in the Southeast of the USA, please consider putting up a nest box for them. They make great neighbors with Eastern Bluebirds and can have nest box in the same area, just place no less than 30 feet apart. An Eastern Bluebird nest box can be converted to a BHN by placing a 1" hole converter over the current Eastern Bluebird 1 1/2" hole.
