A group of juvenile Sanderlings, Calidris alba, bundle together to withstand the cold breeze from the ocean. These little birds stand on one leg and hop with one leg as to keep at least one leg warm. Guess this is a technique they have learned to stay warm since they breed in the High Arctic tundra. The Sanderlings migrate for the winter to warmer sandy beaches. This location stop for them was in Kiawah Island, SC. They are tiny birds at about 8". In fact, when I first spotted these little ones from a distance on the beach I thought it was plastic bottles and trash as most were nestled in the sand between the sea reed. Image my excitement when I saw one hopping on one leg:)

One of my most favorite birds for sure, I find very few others that I like to photograph as much as a Sanderling. In fact I'm going to put one in today that you will enjoy. The way they fly together is almost impossible to catch but its such a sight to behold.
