A Brown-headed Nuthatch, Sitta Pusilla, perches on an old branch while making a plead to the rain clouds - "Please Stop The Rain, it's giving me a really bad feather day!" This nuthatch is smaller in size than the White-breasted Nuthatch as well as faster in movement and flight. Their small size is not represented in their loud and distinct "squeaky-dog-toy" chirp. When two of these Brown-headed Nuthatches get together the squeaks they make talking back and forth to one another is extremely comical. Until this captured moment, I had never noticed the white patch of feathers on the base of their neck - remember I did say they move extremely fast!
These little guys are losing population, so if you live in the Southeast of the USA, please consider putting up a nest box for them. They make great neighbors with Eastern Bluebirds and can have nest box in the same area, just place no less than 30 feet apart. An Eastern Bluebird nest box can be converted to a BHN by placing a 1" hole converter over the current Eastern Bluebird 1 1/2" hole.
